“Extrinsic
motivation is related to ‘tangible’ rewards such as salary and fringe benefits,
security, promotion, contract of service, the work environment and conditions
of work. Such tangible rewards are often determined at the organizational level
and may be largely outside the control of individual managers.
"Intrinsic
motivation is related to ‘psychological’ rewards such as the opportunity
to use One’s ability, a sense of challenge and achievement, receiving
appreciation, positive recognition and
being treated in a caring and considerate manner. The psychological rewards are
those that can usually be determined by the actions and behavior of individual
managers. " Mullins (2010, p254)

Nice article sherin, may I know Why psychological reward you have picked for motivation ?
ReplyDeleteIntrinsic motivation is the sustainable way to motivate employee in order to retaining the organization that will lead to achieve competitive advantage of the organization.
ReplyDeleteHi Sherin,
ReplyDeleteYou have nicely explained the two terms extrinsic and intrinsic motivation very simply. Yes, I agree what you have mentioned here. When we are intrinsically motivates, our behavior is motivated by our internal desire to do something for its own sake, for example, your personal enjoyment of an activity, or your desire to learn a skill because you're eager to learn.
As an example,
• Reading a book because you enjoy the storytelling
• Exercising because you want to relieve stress
• Cleaning your home because it helps you feel organized
And When you're extrinsically motivated, your behavior is motivated by an external factor pushing you to do something in hopes of earning a reward -- or avoiding a less-than-positive outcome.
Examples are,
• Reading a book to prepare for a test
• Exercising to lose weight
• Cleaning your home to prepare for visitors coming over.
I think it would be useful for you to go through the below article, which i found while searching few more details on this topic.

ReplyDeletehi sherin,
ReplyDeletei tough alignment of aims, purpose and values between staff, teams and organization is the most fundamental aspect of motivation. The better the alignment and personal association with organizational aims, the better the platform for motivation.
